George was my father-in-law, and I am proud to say that, with the deepest love and respect.

George welcomed me into his family with such warmth, love and kindness that it was an incredible feeling from the very beginning. There are so many memories to treasure and be inspired by. George was a storyteller and he talked so fondly about growing up in Bulgaria, his career in teaching and his many students, some of whom became his friends and remained in contact with him even in his later years. I was fortunate enough to meet one of his former students and witness firsthand the respect and affection with which he was regarded.

When I lived with George and the family and later when we used to visit, we spent many nights, usually over a meal he had cooked, watching his favourite shows and countless football matches together. His stories about Bulgaria inspired us to visit the places he had lived and worked, and we made many pilgrimages to Veliko Tarnovo, Plovdiv, Kitten, and Malko Tarnovo. We will be doing the same again this year, for sure.

His presence throughout our lives was warm, considerate and deeply meaningful. He showed his love in quiet ways, through consistency, through care, and through his kindness, which we still feel and always will. There were so many gatherings in Wimbledon for birthdays, New Year and other special occasions, always topped with his famous signature dish of lamb and bulgur.

George was someone you could rely on, humble, strong and full of positivity. His stories, his wisdom and the way he showed love for his family will remain with us forever. The relationship between George and our daughter Sofia was truly special and we are so grateful for the many precious memories they shared. Particularly magical and joyful were the times when she turned the tables on him and Val and used to give them long lectures on history or a maths lesson, while they listened, absorbed and patiently followed her instructions.

Though George may no longer be with us, his impact remains, woven into our family and our memories. We are grateful for the time we shared and will carry him in our hearts forever.

You are loved and always will be, by us all.

Professor George Papanchev was my Modern English Literature professor at Sofia University for just one semester, more than thirty years ago, yet I remember him vividly. His quiet passion, clarity of thought, brilliant erudite mind and respect for his students left a lasting impression that has outlived the course itself. I remember him with gratitude as one of those rare teachers who lingers in the memory gently but unmistakably across a lifetime.

Светъл му път.

On the occasions we have had the pleasure to spend time with George and his family, the things that stand out was how warm and charming he was. He was a lovely man and a true gentleman who will be missed by all. Our thoughts are with Valia and his family 💜

So sad that George has left us…

Seems like only yesterday I first met George and Valia and in the 25 years that followed I was lucky to spend time with such a lovely man who became my father in law.

Always welcoming and friendly, with a story to tell or a Nazdavé to share. We enjoyed many family times together in London, Sofia, Scotland and the Black Sea. My family got to know George well, and they all loved him too for his genuine soul and upbeat spirit.

He was a true gentleman from a different time, who never gave up, still putting his best foot forward, right up to the end.

He was a man of culture, his love of books and literature brought him to England, but he never forgot his Bulgarian roots.

Every birthday, New Year or celebration George would make his signature lamb and bulgur dish to follow the rakia and salads.

He always made everyone feel at ease and happy just by being there.

I will remember the English professor, translator and storyteller, a well known figure both home and abroad.

But it is as a family man he will be missed most. Always the head of the table, his calm and steady presence now gone.

We are lost without him but will remember him with love, always. xxx

It is all still too painful. But my memories of dad are always lit by his brightness and spirit, his always adventurous and positive 'never give up' attitude, and above all, his love for us, his family.

He may be gone, but he'll always be in my heart and mind, guiding me through tough situations with a few wise words; that was his way.

My memories of him and with him are countless, and it always makes me smile, thinking of him. That one time as a small toddler when I started taking off my clothes on a freezing beach in Burgas in December, until he stopped me, laughing.

Dad teaching me to drive the old Lada, in Strandzha and Novi Pazar.

The period where I spent a couple of summers helping dad with the building of the villa in Bistritsa - that alone could fill a book!

The drives around the country, between Sofia, Malko Tarnovo, Burgas, Novi Pazar and Shumen - always looking out for something new and interesting like historical treasures, but never forgetting something traditional and satisfying, like getting peaches from the sellers on the road near Sliven.

Or the hilarious time when we forgot that we had lots of bottles of tomato juice in the car, but dad left it in the summer heat while we went to Gradina beach, and we found the car covered in tomato juice when we got back.

Then there were the amazing cross-European adventures by car, journeys between Sofia and London, including breaking a front windscreen, getting stuck amidst a Russian military convoy, and even the Yugoslav war.

I'll never forget the years when we worked together, running the family business between us, those were good times.

But above all, I will never forget dad's love for life, his endless 'glass half full' optimism, cheeky smile, endless entertaining stories and his warm heart and utter love and dedication to us, his family.

George Papantchev, a true gentleman in the best meaning of the word, and a man of letters.

I miss you, Dad. Shine on.

George was my dad and my favourite person in the world. A man for whom family was everything. A patient, kind and wise father and teacher. A man full of optimism, who always looked on the bright side of life and able to keep his good humour even in the most difficult circumstances. His positivity was infectious and he was never one to complain, something he managed to maintain even in his dying days.

To me personally, he was the one person I could always rely on and one who would never go back on his word. One of my earliest memories of this was as a 9 year old who spent 6 months in hospital. It was a lonely and occasionally terrifying time, but one thing I could always rely on was that dad would always find the time to visit, without fail, and bring me anything that I had asked for the previous time and more besides. To that little girl this meant everything. I knew I was loved unconditionally.

Much later, when I had a child of my own, my daughter was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the same radiant optimism that for us defined this charming man. Now, when times seem hard, the two of us have a saying: "What would George do in this situation?" A reminder of how we would like to live life, and what he taught by example.
